Velskoen Drive-in Closure, Money versus Memories!
When my Mom showed me the article in the local paper this past weekend, I literally couldnt believe that the Drive-in was going to close down!
I always thought that Ster-Kinekor would cash in on an upgarde and attract a new generation of spenders who appreciated the variety of an outdoor movie experience???
I grew up next to the Winsor Drive-in and know 1st hand of what its like to have the opportunity to grow up in the "Drive-in lifestyle".
Most of my weekends were a memorable adventure with family and friends and all the "good old fashioned stuff" that went with going to the drive-in.
What I mean to say, and explain more clearly, is that, my childhood does not include memories of the Shopping Mall, Games Arcades and the extreme exposure to commercial advertising as one now finds when you "go to the movies"!?
Im a 36 year "young" woman, who has a 2 year old and would have liked to continue taking my son to watch a movie outdoors, under the stars, and not have to walk past 50 stores of "I wants" just to go and watch a movie!!!
Here's a business idea for Ster-Kinekor to make money, seeing its the only thing they seem to be interested in, and not family values:
Upgrade the venue, replace the screen & turn it into a 50's Diner Vibe with waitresses on roller-skates.
Do something similar to the Menlyn Drive-in and hire out classic cars to sit in and watch the shows!?
All of this is a money spin off and Im sure it will be packed. It is already now even without all the changes?
But, alas, the "big fat cats" have already signed the done deal and are smoking their money pipes!
Ster-Kinekor really do not care about Community and Old Family Values do they?
Maybe NU-METRO will win the hearts back of all the people who agree with me, and open up another Drive-in that we can all go and support?!!
