Driving safety tips during wet weather

During very wet weather motorists are urged to keep safe by following these simple safety tips:
• Drive with your vehicles head lights on to make yourself more visible to other road users.
• Slow down to a safer travelling speed, this will give you more time to react in an emergency situation.
• Increase your following distance. Be aware that loose gravel on the road surface may cause your vehicle to slide during braking.
• Approach bridges and low level crossings with caution. Many low level crossing are under water due to the heavy rains and these may not be safe to cross.
• Children must be advised of the dangers of flash floods and must not be allowed to play under bridges or in/near storm water drains. Sadly in the past several children have died whilst playing in these locations and were caught unaware and were swept away by flood waters.
