Walk the Talk 2010 - the biggest yet
The Discovery 702 Walk the Talk took place at Marks Park Sports Club in Judith Road, Emmarentia on Sunday July 25. With 55 000 entries, it is the biggest mass participation event in Africa.
For the 2010 Walk, the organizers decided to give each participant a t-shirt, in a colour that depended on which event they were walking in. The visual effect of thousands of walkers coming together in the same colour was stunning. The largest event this year was the 8km which attracted 22 000 walkers in blue t-shirts.
A portion of the entries to the 5km and 8km events goes towards the official Walk he Talk charity - the Laureus Foundation. Their Sport for Good programme had identified the Johannesburg Cubs as the beneficiaries for this year's Walk.
The Cubs use cricket to uplift underprivileged youth and the budding cricket stars got to walk with one of their idols - Shaun Pollock - this year. In total R400 000 was raised for the Cubs and handed over to the Laureus ambassadors, including Lucas Radebe and Baby Jake after the event.
Another special walker to participate in this year's event for a good cause was Mrs Graca Machel who walked to raise funds and awareness for Africa for Haiti.
