International FADO sensation to perform in Jozi
For one night only, on Friday September 24, international FADO sensation Katia Guerreiro will be performing at the Teatro at Montecasino, proudly presented by the Johannesburg Arts Alive International Festival in partnership with the Teatro at Montecasino and with the support of the Portuguese Consul General.
What better day to enjoy Joburg-born Katia’s rousing FADO performance than on Heritage Day – sharing this traditional art form with not just a Portuguese audience but with all lovers of stirring world music.
Although she grew up in the Azores, Johannesburg can be proud that this internationally celebrated Fadista was born in the City of Gold. A doctor by profession, and former lead singer of a rock band, Katia Guerreiro has enjoyed a meteoric rise to fame as one of the finest Fadistas of her generation and a leading light of the Portuguese and global FADO revival.
Her performance career has seen her traverse the globe – picking up numerous awards and accolades on her way. The Portuguese Government has acknowledged her for her remarkable contribution to Portuguese art and culture.
Her deep knowledge and eloquent understanding of FADO sees her engaging with international musicologists and academics. Her talent is matched with a commitment to ensuring that FADO not only enjoys its revival but also continues to be discovered and enjoyed by music lovers the world over.
She has graced stages and appeared on the most important festival programs in: France, Morocco, Belgium, England, Wales, Egypt, Switzerland, Spain, Norway, Poland, Sweden, Greece, South Korea, Japan, Italy, Tunisia, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Canada, New Caledonia, Turkey and India. Everywhere she performs the audiences cherish and applaud her art.
In recognition of her exquisite talent and contribution to the FADO revival she recently received one of the highest accolades a Fadista can receive – that of the “Best Performer of Fado” awarded by the Amalia Rodrigues Foundation.
Make a date with Katia Guerreiro as she takes centre stage at the Teatro at Montecasino on 24 September during the Johannesburg Arts Alive International Festival.
